16,425 days and counting... my lifetime so far.

Today, I've been around 16,425 days(not counting leap years).

Besides being the beginning of a new decade and now it's my birthday... I'm in one of those pondering moods where my mind wanders around asking questions.

Who do I want to be?
What do I dream will come true?
How do I want to be remembered?
How will I spend my time and energy?
What mark do I want to leave on the world?

For now, I am thinking two things...

I want to laugh more and enjoy the journey. (I can be a bit too serious!) AND

I want to celebrate those I love by pointing out the unique contributions they make in the world!

Hopefully, along the way people might notice a bit of Jesus in me.

What are you hoping for in the days to ahead?

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12

  1. I like your idea of pointing out one's unique contributions to the world. I'm trying to remember the last time someone pointed out mine??? Trying to remember the last time I did this to someone else? Mmmm....this is good. A good practice to start. This practice, however, requires proximity to another's life, being fully present with them, and listening to more than their words. This will be a little tough, but wow, would this be meaningful.

    Thanks for the idea!

Broken and Beautiful

Walking on the beach awhile back I began noticing the broken shells being washed up along the shoreline.  I looked closer, I began to notice the edges, the colors, the cracks and the holes. As I stood turning the shell over in the palm of my hand I began to think about what had caused this deep imprint, the scar, the broken edge.

What had been attached to this shell?
What had crashed up against it with enough strength to break off the outer edge?
For how long had it been washing up against this same shoreline?

It reminded me of a an encounter with a beautiful woman in Colorado years ago.  We had enjoyed dinner together at a women's retreat in the mountains. Sharing parts of our stories and parts of our struggles.

Prayers, Diversity and Being Me

Two years ago, I was asked to offer the invocation for the Economic Club sponsored by WFYI.

Of course I could do that and I'd be honored.  came floating out of my mouth when the request was made.

Then I began the process of thinking through what to pray and how to pray.

I am quite familiar with how my faith community prays but what about this group.

This group of 700+ community leaders and business professional would represent  a diverse audience representing all kinds of different faith backgrounds.

God, Me and You

So much of the way we think and live has to do with what we believe.  What DO we believe about God?   What DO we believe about ourselves?  And what DO we believe about others. It seems these questions are not in anyway new to humanity.  From the very beginning, we've struggled
